I make narrative work of contemporary tableaus that are primarily figurative. By painting the female figure with reference to my own body, I re-contextualize the genre of the Female Nude. I am interested in transforming the female form from a passive object to a self portrait, as I am the author, subject, and viewer. These figurative paintings narrate situations that feel familiar and inviting, yet are ultimately unnerving, and mythical.
In my collage work I develop these ideas free from the weight of the figure. The collages bring objects into conflict, confronting fear and anxiety through humor and play. They draw power from the allure of memory to the alienated and anxious mind.
MY BODY MY CORPSE
2019 series explores future environmental and economic collapse in relation to class privilege and consumption. As we creep closer to a environmental disaster, we reject science and evidence, and turn towards antiquated pseudoscience. Women's magazines advertise the best products to keep skin dewy and moisturized, while remaining in suspended animation. Bright colors behind collages of candles, balms, and tissues signify self care in place of action, describing a passive class conscious. Modern Soothsayers practice Haruspex above-ground for less fortunate masses—people sleep comfortably in conditioned bunkers, or burn on the surface based on wealth. Humor and fear go hand in hand, while imagined, these tableau's are based in a likely reality.
